About Heather

Heather Lowe’s work is concerned with perception in the tradition of Optical Art. She was born in Santa Monica, attended SMCC, City College of San Francisco, and UC Santa Cruz where she acquired a variety of art techniques such as etching, Chinese Brush Painting, figure drawing, and sculpture. She began exhibiting her optical paintings through L.A. Artcore in Los Angeles and continued exhibiting her paintings for fifteen years. Lowe then discovered stereo photography which led her to lenticular media. Lenticulars allow a viewer to see a changing, moving image from different perspectives. She has worked with lenticulars for over fifteen years creating flip, morph, animation and 3-D effects and she continues to explore new ways to employ this medium to her art.

For this specific installation titled CAGES artists collaborated on Zoom guided by a specific template. The movement and spatial proportions were inspired by “Music of Changes” by John Cage.

Her work has been exhibited widely, including the Annenberg Beach House Gallery, the Neutra Institute Gallery, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, bG Gallery and a solo exhibit in Monaco. Heather Lowe currently resides in Los Angeles, where she has a studio at Keystone Art Space.

“During our sheltering in place, it became necessary and challenging to innovate. Communication came to a standstill until artists began to find new ways to discuss, share and to create online. My work generally relies on interaction and movement. I love to show, discuss and experience art with others. I found myself on Zoom every day whether to educate myself, or to meet with family or to catch up with close friends. I began to see the possibilities of collaboration on Zoom. I created three templates (4” x 7”) and sent them to three groups of artists. The templates were based on the Golden Section and other formal ratios. We agreed to meet at a particular time to perform on Zoom. The cards were placed directly in the camera eye. They were then rotated every seven seconds. I wanted each person to count silently and to move by being aware of one another. Human imperfection and interaction were important to the work. The original pieces can be seen accompanied by ‘Music of Changes’ by John Cage on my YouTube channel.”
