Health & Wellness Expo 2019

On Sunday, June 23rd from 12:00 to 5:00 pm, Helms Bakery District is pleased to partner with Leadership Culver City to host a FREE community Wellness Expo and lifestyle reboot.

Join us for a campus-wide day of education, information, participation, and healthy fun. Creating small changes toward a nourishing and beneficial lifestyle are paramount to good health. Stop by to learn about financial wellness, join a meditation session, learn CPR with the Culver City Fire Department, take a class led by the YMCA, discover the benefits of home composting and gardening, or get organized using the KonMari method.  

Being charitable is known to improve your health so we’re providing ways for you to give back as well: UCLA  will be on site to organize a blood drive in memory of Culver City Fire Department Chief Mike Nagy, who tragically passed away this past September; The Samburu Project will host a popup shop in support of their mission – providing access to clean, safe drinking water; and learn about the Leadership Culver City program and how you can get involved in your community.

The Samburu Project

The Samburu pop-up shop features a collection of handcrafted products in support of a great cause. Based in the Helms Bakery complex, The Samburu Project is a non-profit organization that has been providing easy access to clean, safe drinking water and more to communities in Samburu, Kenya since 2005. To date, The Samburu Project has drilled 100 wells and serves 100,000 people. Water Is Health, Education, Community, Empowerment, Dignity, Hope, Life.

UCLA joins the Wellness Expo by hosting a Blood Drive in memory of Mike Nagy. The Bloodmobile will be parked in the lot behind Rejuvenation. Composting Made Easy

Green Team Composting is comprised of a group of volunteers dedicated to educating the youth on regenerating soil through various compost methods to combat pollution and climate change. Green Team will reveal the power of compost with demo boxes and show how simple it is to compost in your own home.

Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) is continually exploring new and creative ways to meet the recreation, leisure, and senior and social services needs of the community.  The numerous programs and services offered provide access to information and support, as well as opportunities for participation in activities that lead to personal growth, improved health, and enriching life experiences.  The Veterans Memorial Building, Teen Center, Senior Center, and Culver City Pool provide both recreational and rental opportunities to the public.

Walk With A Doc

Let’s get moving! Walking is a great form of exercise for maintaining good health. Join the 1-hour Walk With A Doc led by Council Member Thomas Small and special guests from the Culver City Arts District & Neighborhood Association. The tour begins at Helms Bakery and travels through the Arts District, with discussions about future development plans, expected changes, and beautification along Washington Boulevard. Plus, you’ll pop into area businesses along the route. The group meets at the Info Booth on Helms Avenue at 12:45 pm. Walking shoes and water are recommended.

 

 

Join the Culver City Garden Club

Culver City Garden Club is a non-profit organization established in 1953 by residents sharing a common interest in gardening and the life-lessons nature provides. Their founders included GIs returning from World War II who settled in the sunnier climes of Southern California with their families. Stop by their booth to learn more about starting your own garden. Artifishal is a film about wild rivers and wild fish that explores the high cost—ecological, financial and cultural—of our mistaken belief that engineered solutions can make up for habitat destruction. The film traces the impact of fish hatcheries, and the extraordinary amount of public money wasted on an industry that hinders wild fish recovery, pollutes our rivers, and contributes to the problem it claims to solve. Chef Paola will show and teach how to make gnocchi from scratch starting with how to choose the perfect potatoes, creating an elastic and smooth dough, how to preserve them, and finally how to cook them.
