Marina Heintze has been written up in Artnet News, Hyperallergic, The NY Post, The NY Magazine, Bedford + Bowery, Racked NY, Inked Magazine, Vast Art Issue #02, Still-Point, All She Makes, United Hemispheres, Galore, Bust, and Meow Wolf. She has shown at Kerry Schuss, KNOCKDOWN Center, The Bendix Building: High Beams, Field Projects, SpringBreak LA, Shrine NYC, and Art Share LA. As of late, she has made the selection for the Artist Windows of WeHo (WoW) by The Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission in Los Angeles, California as well as received The Mozaik Future Art Award Grant for Re-Imagining Democracy and The Culver City Arts Foundation Grant in Partnership with Helms Street Bakery District for the year-long installation: Projecting Possibilities in 2021.
“The body is a field. Always a moving target and without a doubt, riddled by an uncomplicated notion of the human condition as a fragile crime scene. I am half artist and half pseudo-doctor, who hones in on science, diseases/viruses, cancers, and epigenetic trauma. The USA is a train-wreck culture built on cycles of violence – rinse and repeat; my work is steeped in the indexicality of variants of violence, personal experience, and the persecution of my ancestors.
I build graphic large-scale Ultra-Mod assemblages through meticulous processes including repetitive cutting and layering of stickered patterning, velcroing, and collage techniques. My color palettes are informed by my research and development in medical science and my work experience as a tattoo artist. My ‘WET’ palette contains synthetic stains used in Gram’s Method to classify bacteria such as Gentian Violet, Methylene Blue, Malachite Green, and Neon Basic Yellow for Latent Fingerprinting. The ‘DRY’ palette is comprised of graphic ephemera such as target stickers, shooting target poster paper, holographic Tamper-Resistant/Evidence stickers, and Made in the USA labels. Through extraction and combination, I convert simple symbols such as targets, pin-up silhouettes, hashtags, webs, and thermal heat maps to address themes of sexual violence, pathologies of power, and the imperfection of the human condition.
No stone is left unturned in my evaluation of society’s sordid past and distraught trajectory. Recently I have found strange coincidences that link all of the subjects together; a common theme that I have found to be true is that everything is connected. Stripped, embodied, and physicalized into a mirror, my work becomes a prophetic warning sign for the modern human viewer.”
