Westside Urban Forum Virtual Discussion: After the Pandemic, How L.A.’s Restaurants and Retail Will Heal

June 10, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

Free
On Wednesday, June 10th from 2:00 to 3:10 pm. please join Westside Urban Forum in a special, socially distanced series of online discussions: After the Pandemic, How L.A.’s Restaurants and Retail Will Heal

Though the Los Angeles region is justly famous for its dining and shopping options, many stores and restaurants have been operating on thin margins in recent years. Stores have competed with online retailers, and restaurants have faced rising rents and increased costs. And then the Coronavirus pandemic.

The economic devastation to local businesses, many of which are cornerstones of L.A. civic life and local character, is evident already. How can these businesses recover? What combination of rent relief, government assistance, creativity, and civic spirit will ensure that they thrive? Will local planners have to rethink their approaches to “activating” ground floors, and will local cities need to rezone retail units to allow for more uses if incumbent businesses fail and are not replaced? How else might changes to commerce reshape our neighborhoods in the short and long term?
